Can you read it yet?
Every learner eyeing a Russian shelf asks the same question, and almost everything answers it with a level or a mood. This answers it with arithmetic. Each book below has a page that shows you forty-odd of its own words, spread across the frequency ladder from the commonest to the rare; you mark the ones you know, and the page reads your count against the book's own coverage curve — how much of its running text you would hold, and how many of its sentences would contain no stranger at all.
The threshold worth knowing before you start: reading research puts comfortable unassisted reading at roughly 95–98% of running words known. Below that a page is close work; well below it, decoding. The argument, and what those numbers mean on this shelf, is set out in the guide — and every figure the verdicts use is published in the ledger.

The last column is the honest spread of the shelf: at a thousand known words «Лошадиная фамилия» already reads clean in 52.2% of its sentences, while the long Gogol and Dostoevsky still hold out. Where you stand on that spread is what each book's page measures.
How the check works
The sample is stratified: the ladder's seven thousand rungs are cut into bands, and each band contributes a handful of the book's own words, taken at evenly spaced ranks. Marking a band's words estimates how much of that band you hold; the bands weighted together estimate how deep into the ladder you stand; and the verdict is the book's own curve read at that depth. It is a screen of forty words, not an examination — a fair estimate, stated in the corpus's own terms, and checkable against the published numbers.
Nothing you mark is sent anywhere. The counting happens in the page, and the page forgets it when you leave.
