Where to start reading in Spanish
Almost every «Spanish short stories for beginners» list is either graded readers — which nobody wants to have read — or a pile of real literature handed over undifferentiated, as though a fable for children and a Borges story asked the same thing of you. Here is an order with a number against every step, measured on the texts themselves.
The question is not «how long», it is «how much is new»
A longer book built out of words you already hold is easier than a short one that is all new, and length cannot see the difference. So the shelf below is not sorted by length. It is sorted by cost: how many dictionary words each tale asks that the tales before it did not.
That number falls the whole way down — 327 for the first tale, 129 for the eighth — because these eight are one forest with the same river and the same animals in it. 715 of the shelf's 1,516 dictionary words (47%) appear in more than one tale. Every book you finish makes the next one cheaper, which is the whole argument for reading a shelf rather than a story.

Las medias de los flamencos — The Flamingos’ Stockings
Free and complete, with no account: the whole tale in the Spanish of 1918, every word glossed where it stands and an English line under every sentence. It costs 327 dictionary words, and it is the only one on the shelf where every one of them is new to you.
La tortuga gigante — The Giant Tortoise
The second step, and it asks only 235 new dictionary words after the first — against the 327 the first one asked. Its opening scene plays free, so you can see whether the second book really is easier before you decide anything.

Read those counts as a measure of this shelf and not as a claim about what the Instituto Cervantes requires. German has the Goethe Wortlisten, which are published word counts; Cervantes publishes no such list, and every «A2 = 1,500 words» on the internet is somebody's estimate wearing an official coat. The exams named here are real — DELE is the exam a learner actually sits — and the thresholds beside them are this house's own working figures, drawn from the reading literature. B1 lies past the end of these eight: the shelf holds 1,516 distinct words between them, which carries you through A1 whole and well into A2. Sit the exam when the reading feels easy.

That is the point of a glossed reader: the vocabulary arrives while you read rather than before.
