За ним, опустив головы, шагают старая Каштанка и кобелек Вьюн, прозванный так за свой черный цвет и тело, длинное, как у ласки. Behind him, their heads hanging, pace old Kashtanka and the little dog Vyun, so named for his black colour and for his body, long as a weasel's.

Этот Вьюн необыкновенно почтителен и ласков, одинаково умильно смотрит как на своих, так и на чужих, но кредитом не пользуется. This Vyun is uncommonly respectful and affectionate, and looks just as fondly upon his own people as upon strangers, but he enjoys no credit.

Никто лучше его не умеет вовремя подкрасться и цапнуть за ногу, забраться в ледник или украсть у мужика курицу. Nobody knows better than he how to steal up at the right moment and snap at a leg, to slip into the ice-cellar, or to make off with a peasant's hen.

Ему уж не раз отбивали задние ноги, раза два его вешали, каждую неделю пороли до полусмерти, но он всегда оживал. More than once his hind legs have been beaten to a pulp, twice he has been hanged, every week he has been flogged half to death, but he has always come back to life.
