Vanka

А. П. 1886 · 1,153 words · 85 sentences · Free, whole, no account

Nine-year-old Vanka writes a letter “to grandfather, in the village”. The shortest and the sharpest story on the shelf — and thick with village words: save it for later, not for first. Below is the entire story in Russian, with the English translation under each sentence.

Read it in the reader instead — same text, but every word is glossed where it stands: tap any word for its dictionary form, its meaning and where the stress falls, and the English stays out of your eyeline until you ask for it. That is the version that teaches; this page is the version a search engine can read.

Vanka Zhukov, a nine-year-old boy who had been apprenticed three months ago to the shoemaker Alyakhin, did not go to bed on Christmas Eve.

Having waited until the master's household and the journeymen had gone off to the midnight service, he took a little bottle of ink and a pen with a rusty nib out of his master's cupboard and, spreading a crumpled sheet of paper out before him, began to write.

Before tracing the first letter, he glanced timorously several times at the doors and windows, cast a sidelong look at the dark icon, on either side of which stretched shelves of shoe-lasts, and drew a broken sigh.

The paper lay on a bench, and he himself knelt on the floor before the bench.

“Dear grandfather, Konstantin Makarych!

— he wrote.

— And I am writing you a letter.

I congratulate you on Christmas and wish you all good things from the Lord God.

I have neither father nor mummy, you are the only one I have left.”

Vanka shifted his eyes to the dark window, in which the reflection of his candle flickered, and vividly pictured to himself his grandfather Konstantin Makarych, who served as night watchman to the Zhivarev family.

He is a small, scrawny, but uncommonly nimble and lively old codger of about sixty-five, with an everlastingly laughing face and drunken eyes.

By day he sleeps in the servants' kitchen or jokes with the cooks; by night, muffled in a roomy sheepskin coat, he walks round the estate and taps his watchman's rattle.

Behind him, their heads hanging, pace old Kashtanka and the little dog Vyun, so named for his black colour and for his body, long as a weasel's.

This Vyun is uncommonly respectful and affectionate, and looks just as fondly upon his own people as upon strangers, but he enjoys no credit.

Beneath his respectfulness and meekness there lurks the most Jesuitical malice.

Nobody knows better than he how to steal up at the right moment and snap at a leg, to slip into the ice-cellar, or to make off with a peasant's hen.

More than once his hind legs have been beaten to a pulp, twice he has been hanged, every week he has been flogged half to death, but he has always come back to life.

Just now, most likely, grandfather is standing at the gates, screwing up his eyes at the bright red windows of the village church and, stamping his felt boots, cracking jokes with the household servants.

His rattle is tied to his belt.

He flings up his hands, hugs himself against the cold and, with an old man's snigger, pinches now the housemaid, now the cook.

— What about a pinch of snuff for us, eh?

— he says, holding out his snuffbox to the women.

The women take a sniff and sneeze.

Grandfather goes into indescribable raptures, breaks into merry laughter and shouts:

— Tear it off, it's frozen on!

The dogs are given a sniff of the snuff too.

Kashtanka sneezes, twists her muzzle and, offended, walks away.

Vyun, however, out of respectfulness does not sneeze, but wags his tail.

And the weather is magnificent.

The air is still, clear and fresh.

The night is dark, but one can see the whole village with its white roofs and the little threads of smoke rising from the chimneys, the trees silvered with hoarfrost, the snowdrifts.

The whole sky is strewn with merrily twinkling stars, and the Milky Way stands out as clearly as if it had been washed and scrubbed with snow for the holiday…

Vanka sighed, dipped his pen and went on writing:

“And yesterday I got a hiding.

The master dragged me out into the yard by the hair and gave me a going-over with a strap because I was rocking their baby in its cradle and accidentally dropped off to sleep.

And in the week the mistress told me to clean a herring, and I began from the tail, so she took the herring and started poking me in the mug with its head.

The journeymen jeer at me, send me to the tavern for vodka and make me steal the master's cucumbers, and the master beats me with whatever comes to hand.

And there is no food at all.

In the morning they give bread, at dinner porridge, and in the evening bread again, but as for tea or cabbage soup, the master and mistress gobble that up themselves.

And they make me sleep in the passage, and when their baby cries I don't sleep at all, but rock the cradle.

Dear grandfather, do me the godly kindness, take me away from here, home to the village, there is no bearing it any longer…

I bow down at your feet and will pray to God for you for ever, carry me away from here, or else I shall die…”

Vanka twisted his mouth, rubbed his eyes with his black fist and gave a sob.

“I will grind your tobacco for you,” he went on, “I will pray to God, and if anything is wrong, then flog me like Sidor's goat.

And if you think there is no position for me, then I will beg the shop assistant for Christ's sake to let me clean boots, or I will go as shepherd boy in Fedka's place.

Dear grandfather, there is no bearing it, it is simply death.

I thought of running away to the village on foot, but I have no boots and I am afraid of the frost.

And when I grow up big, for this very thing I will feed you and let nobody do you wrong, and when you die I will pray for the repose of your soul, just the same as for mummy Pelageya.

And Moscow is a big city.

The houses are all gentlefolk's and there are lots of horses, but there are no sheep and the dogs are not vicious.

The lads don't go round with the star here and they don't let anybody sing in the church choir, and once in a shop window I saw hooks for sale, sold right along with the line and for every kind of fish, very much worth the money, there is even one hook that would hold a sheatfish weighing a whole pood.

And I saw some shops where there are guns of every sort like the master's, so I dare say they cost a hundred roubles apiece…

And in the butchers' shops there are black grouse and hazel grouse and hares, but where they are shot the shopmen won't say.

Dear grandfather, and when the gentlefolk have their Christmas tree with presents on it, get me a gilded walnut and hide it in the little green chest.

Ask the young mistress Olga Ignatyevna for it, say it is for Vanka.”

Vanka sighed convulsively and stared at the window again.

He remembered that it was always grandfather who went to the forest for the gentlefolk's Christmas tree, and that he took his grandson along with him.

What a merry time that was!

Grandfather grunted, and the frost grunted, and, looking at them, Vanka grunted too.

Before cutting down the fir, grandfather would smoke a pipe, take a long sniff of snuff, and chuckle at little Vanya, chilled to the bone…

The young firs, muffled in hoarfrost, stand motionless and wait — which of them is to die?

From out of nowhere a hare comes flying like an arrow over the snowdrifts…

Grandfather cannot help shouting:

держи!

— Hold him, hold him… hold him!

Ah, the bob-tailed devil!

Grandfather would drag the felled fir to the master's house, and there they would set about decorating it…

The one who bustled about most of all was the young mistress Olga Ignatyevna, Vanka's favourite.

While Vanka's mother Pelageya was still alive and served the gentlefolk as a housemaid, Olga Ignatyevna used to feed Vanka sweets and, having nothing better to do, taught him to read, to write, to count up to a hundred, and even to dance the quadrille.

But when Pelageya died, the orphan Vanka was packed off to the servants' kitchen to his grandfather, and from the kitchen to Moscow, to the shoemaker Alyakhin…

“Do come, dear grandfather,” Vanka went on, “by Christ our God I beg you, take me away from here.

Have pity on me, a wretched orphan, for everybody knocks me about and I am terribly hungry, and the dreariness is such as cannot be told, I am always crying.

And the other day the master hit me on the head with a last, so that I fell down and hardly came round.

My life is a lost one, worse than any dog's…

And I send my greetings besides to Alyona, to one-eyed Yegorka and to the coachman, and don't give my concertina to anybody.

I remain your grandson Ivan Zhukov, dear grandfather do come.”

Vanka folded the covered sheet in four and put it into an envelope bought the day before for a kopeck…

After thinking a little, he dipped his pen and wrote the address:

Then he scratched himself, thought a moment, and added: “To Konstantin Makarych.”

Pleased that nobody had hindered his writing, he put on his cap and, without throwing his little coat over him, ran out into the street in nothing but his shirt…

The shopmen from the butcher's, whom he had questioned the day before, had told him that letters are dropped into post boxes, and that from the boxes they are carried all over the earth on mail troikas with drunken drivers and jingling bells.

Vanka ran as far as the nearest post box and thrust the precious letter into the slit…

Lulled by sweet hopes, an hour later he was sound asleep…

He dreamed of the stove.

On the stove sits grandfather, his bare feet dangling, reading the letter aloud to the cooks…

Vyun walks about beside the stove, wagging his tail…
