Chameleon

А. П. 1884 · 901 words · 151 sentences · Free, whole, no account

A police inspector changes his mind about a dog — depending on whose dog it turns out to be. The classic on rank-worship. Below is the entire story in Russian, with the English translation under each sentence.

Read it in the reader instead — same text, but every word is glossed where it stands: tap any word for its dictionary form, its meaning and where the stress falls, and the English stays out of your eyeline until you ask for it. That is the version that teaches; this page is the version a search engine can read.

Across the market square walks the police superintendent Ochumelov, in a new greatcoat and with a little bundle in his hand.

Behind him strides a red-haired policeman with a sieve filled to the brim with confiscated gooseberries.

All around, silence…

Not a soul on the square…

The open doors of the shops and taverns look out upon God’s world as dismally as hungry maws; there are not even any beggars near them.

“So you’d bite, would you, you cursed thing?”

Ochumelov suddenly hears.

“Lads, don’t let her go!

Biting’s not allowed nowadays!

Hold her!

А… а!

A… ah!”

A dog’s yelping is heard.

Ochumelov glances aside and sees: out of the timber yard of Pichugin the merchant, hopping on three legs and looking back as she goes, runs a dog.

After her races a man in a starched cotton shirt and an unbuttoned waistcoat.

He runs after her and, pitching his body forward, falls to the ground and seizes the dog by her hind legs.

A second time the dog’s yelping is heard, and a shout: “Don’t let her go!”

Sleepy faces poke out of the shops, and soon a crowd has gathered by the timber yard, as though it had sprung up out of the ground.

“Looks like a disturbance, Your Honour!..”

says the policeman.

Ochumelov makes a half-turn to the left and strides toward the gathering.

Right by the gates of the yard, he sees, stands the aforesaid man in the unbuttoned waistcoat and, raising his right hand aloft, displays a bloodied finger to the crowd.

On his half-drunk face there is written, as it were: “I’ll have it out of you yet, you rogue!” — and the finger itself has the look of a banner of victory.

In this man Ochumelov recognizes Khryukin the goldsmith.

In the centre of the crowd, its forelegs splayed and its whole body trembling, sits on the ground the very author of the scandal — a white borzoi puppy with a sharp muzzle and a yellow patch on its back.

In its watering eyes is an expression of anguish and terror.

“What is all this about here?”

asks Ochumelov, ploughing into the crowd.

“What are you here for?

And what are you doing with that finger?..

Who was shouting?”

“I’m walking along, Your Honour, bothering nobody…”

Khryukin begins, coughing into his fist.

“About the firewood, with Mitry Mitrich — and all of a sudden this vile creature, for no reason on earth, goes for my finger…

You’ll excuse me, but I’m a man who is a working man…

My work is fine, delicate work.

Let them pay me for it, because with this finger, maybe, I shan’t so much as stir for a week…

There’s nothing in the law either, Your Honour, that a man must put up with it from a dumb beast…

If every one of them is going to bite, then it would be better not to live in this world at all…

“H’m!..

Very good…”

says Ochumelov sternly, coughing and working his eyebrows.

“Very good…

Whose dog is it?

I shall not let this pass.

I’ll teach you people to let dogs run loose!

It is high time attention was paid to gentlemen of that sort, who will not submit to the regulations!

Once they fine him, the scoundrel, he’ll learn from me what a dog means, and the rest of the stray cattle besides!

I’ll show him what’s what!..

Yeldyrin,” the superintendent turns to the policeman, “find out whose dog this is and draw up a report!

And the dog must be destroyed.

Without delay!

She is most likely rabid…

Whose dog is it, I’m asking?”

“It looks to be General Zhigalov’s!”

shouts somebody in the crowd.

“General Zhigalov’s?

H’m!..

Yeldyrin, take my coat off me…

Frightfully hot it is!

Must be coming on to rain, I dare say…

There’s only one thing I don’t understand: how could she have bitten you?”

Ochumelov turns to Khryukin.

“Could she even reach as high as your finger?

She’s a little thing, and you — look what a great hulking fellow you are!

You must have picked the finger open with a little nail, and then the idea came into your head of getting something out of it.

You people are… a well-known lot!

I know you and your kind, you devils!”

“He shoved a lighted cigarette into her snout, Your Honour, for a laugh, and she — being no fool — up and nipped him…

A cantankerous fellow, Your Honour!”

“You’re lying, one-eye!

You didn’t see it, so what do you want to lie for?

Their Honour is a clever gentleman and they understand who is lying and who speaks by his conscience, as before God…

And if I’m lying, then let the justice of the peace decide it.

It is laid down in his law…

Nowadays everyone is equal…

I’ve a brother of my own in the gendarmes… if you want to know…”

— No arguing!

— No, that one's not the General's…

— the policeman remarks profoundly.

— The General hasn't got any like that.

His are mostly pointers…

— Do you know that for certain?

— For certain, Your Honour…

— I know it myself.

The General's dogs are expensive, pedigreed, but this one — the devil knows what it is!

No coat, no looks about it… nothing but low breeding…

And to keep a dog like that?!..

Where are your wits?

If a dog like that turned up in Petersburg or Moscow, do you know what would happen?

There they wouldn't go looking into the law — in a flash: breathe no more!

You, Hryukin, have suffered damages, and don't let this business drop…

They must be taught a lesson!

It's high time…

— But then again, it might be the General's…

— the policeman thinks aloud.

— It isn't written on her muzzle…

The other day I saw one just like her in his yard.

— The General's, to be sure!

— says a voice from the crowd.

— H'm!..

Here, brother Yeldyrin, help me on with my coat…

There's a bit of a wind got up…

It gives me the shivers…

You'll take her round to the General's and ask them there.

Say that I found her and sent her along…

And tell them not to let her out into the street…

She may well be a valuable dog, and if every swine goes poking a cigar at her nose, it won't take long to ruin her.

A dog is a delicate creature…

And you, blockhead, put your hand down!

No sense flaunting that stupid finger of yours!

It's your own fault!..

— Here comes the General's cook, we'll ask him…

Hey, Prokhor!

Step over here, my good fellow!

Take a look at this dog…

Yours?

— The idea!

We've never had the like of her, not in all our born days!

— There's no call to go asking about it at such length, — says Ochumelov.

— She's a stray!

No use standing about talking…

If I said she's a stray, then a stray she is…

Destroy her, and that's the end of it.

— She's not ours, — Prokhor continues.

— She belongs to the General's brother, the one that arrived the other day.

Ours is no lover of borzois.

Their brother, now, he's partial to them…

— You don't mean to say their brother has arrived?

Vladimir Ivanych?

— asks Ochumelov, and his whole face floods with a smile of tenderness. — Well I never, good Lord!

And I never knew!

Come to stay a while, have they?

— On a visit…

— Well I never, good Lord…

Been missing their brother…

And I really had no idea!

So this is their little dog?

Delighted, I'm sure…

Take her along…

She's not a bad little dog…

Quite a lively one…

Snapped this fellow by the finger!

Well, what are you trembling for?

Grrr…

Grr…

Getting cross, the little rogue… what a pup she is…

Prokhor calls the dog and walks off with her away from the woodyard…

The crowd roars with laughter at Hryukin.

— I'll get to you yet!

— Ochumelov threatens him and, wrapping himself in his greatcoat, continues on his way across the market square.

Where to go next

The other thirteen books are graded by level, and the numbers on how much Russian you need are measured on these very texts. If «Хамелеон» was comfortable, the reading order says what to take next.
