Fat and Thin

А. П. 1883 · 511 words · 88 sentences · Free, whole, no account

Two childhood friends meet at a station — until they establish which of them holds the higher rank. Below is the entire story in Russian, with the English translation under each sentence.

Read it in the reader instead — same text, but every word is glossed where it stands: tap any word for its dictionary form, its meaning and where the stress falls, and the English stays out of your eyeline until you ask for it. That is the version that teaches; this page is the version a search engine can read.

At the station of the Nikolaevsky railway two friends met: the one fat, the other thin.

The fat one had just dined at the station, and his lips, glazed with butter, glistened like ripe cherries.

He smelt of sherry and fleur d'orange.

The thin one, for his part, had just stepped down from the carriage and was loaded with suitcases, bundles, and hatboxes.

He smelt of ham and coffee grounds.

From behind his back there peeped a scrawny little woman with a long chin — his wife, and a tall high-school boy with a narrowed eye — his son.

— Porfiry!

exclaimed the fat one, catching sight of the thin one.

— Is it really you?

The fat one was about to raise some objection, but on the thin one's face was written so much reverence, sweetness, and deferential sourness that the privy councillor felt sick.

He turned away from the thin one and held out his hand to him in farewell.
