The Malefactor
A peasant has been unscrewing nuts from the railway line — “for fishing weights”. An interrogation that is funny and then frightening. Below is the entire story in Russian, with the English translation under each sentence.
Read it in the reader instead — same text, but every word is glossed where it stands: tap any word for its dictionary form, its meaning and where the stress falls, and the English stays out of your eyeline until you ask for it. That is the version that teaches; this page is the version a search engine can read.
Before the examining magistrate stands a small, exceedingly scrawny little peasant in a shirt of coarse striped homespun and patched trousers.
His face, overgrown with hair and eaten away by pockmarks, and his eyes, barely visible from under thick, overhanging brows, wear an expression of sullen severity.
On his head is a whole mop of long-uncombed, tangled hair, which lends him a still greater, spiderish severity.
He is barefoot.
— Denis Grigoryev!
— the magistrate begins.
— Step closer and answer my questions.
On the seventh day of this July the railway watchman Ivan Semyonov Akinfov, passing along the line in the morning at the 141st verst, came upon you unscrewing a nut, by which nut the rails are fastened to the sleepers.
Here it is, this very nut!..
With which said nut he thereupon detained you.
Is that how it was?
— Wha’?
— Is that how it all was, just as Akinfov states?
— Sure enough, it was.
— Very well; and now, what were you unscrewing the nut for?
— Wha’?
— Drop that “wha’” of yours and answer the question! what were you unscrewing the nut for?
— If I hadn’t needed it, I wouldn’t have unscrewed it, — rasps Denis, casting a sidelong glance at the ceiling.
— And what did you need this nut for?
— The nut, is it?
We make sinkers out of nuts…
— Who is this “we”?
— We, the folk…
The Klimovo peasants, that is.
— Listen, my good fellow, don’t play the idiot with me, but talk sense.
There’s no use lying to me here about sinkers!
— Never lied in all my born days, and here I am lying…
— mutters Denis, blinking his eyes.
— But how can a man do without a sinker, your honour?
If you put a live minnow or a crawler on the hook, is it going to go to the bottom without a sinker?
Lying, am I…
— Denis smirks.
— What the devil is the good of it, of the live bait, if it’s going to float along the top!
Perch, pike, burbot always take at the bottom, and any bait that floats along the top, why, only an asp will snatch that, and even then but rarely…
In our river the asp doesn’t live…
That fish likes open water.
— What are you telling me about the asp for?
— Wha’?
Why, it’s you yourself that’s asking!
Even the gentry hereabouts fish that way.
The lowliest little boy won’t fish for you without a sinker.
Of course, a man with no understanding, well, he’ll go fishing without a sinker.
For a fool no law is written…
— So you say that you unscrewed this nut in order to make a sinker out of it?
— What else?
Not to play knucklebones with!
— But for a sinker you could have taken lead, a bullet… some little nail…
— Lead you won’t find lying in the road, you have to buy it, and a nail won’t do.
There’s nothing better than a nut to be found…
It’s heavy, and it has a hole.
— What a fool he makes himself out to be!
As though he were born yesterday or dropped out of the sky.
Don’t you understand, you stupid head, what this unscrewing leads to?
If the watchman hadn’t noticed, the train might have gone off the rails, people would have been killed!
You would have killed people!
— God preserve us, your honour!
Why should we kill anybody?
Are we unbaptized, or villains of some sort?
Glory be to God, good sir, we have lived out our lives and not only never killed anyone, we never so much as had such thoughts in our heads…
Save us and have mercy, Queen of Heaven…
Whatever are you saying, sir!
— And what, in your opinion, causes train wrecks?
Unscrew two or three nuts, and there’s your wreck!
Denis smirks and screws up his eyes at the magistrate incredulously.
— Well, now!
For ever so many years the whole village has been unscrewing nuts and the Lord has preserved us, and here it’s a wreck… killed people…
If I had carried off a rail, or, let’s say, laid a log across its track, well, then, maybe, the train would have been turned over, but this… pah! a nut!
— But do understand: it is by nuts that the rail is fastened to the sleepers!
— That we understand…
We don’t unscrew them all, after all… we leave some…
We don’t do it without sense… we understand…
Denis yawns and makes the sign of the cross over his mouth.
— Last year a train went off the rails here, — says the magistrate.
— Now it's clear why…
— Beg pardon, sir?
— Now, I say, it's clear why a train ran off the rails last year…
I understand!
— That is just what you are educated for, to understand, our gracious benefactors…
The Lord knew to whom He gave understanding…
You, now, you reasoned it out, the how and the what of it, but the watchman is a peasant like the rest of us, with no understanding at all — he grabs you by the scruff of the neck and hauls you off…
First reason it out, and then haul away!
As the saying goes — a peasant, and a peasant's wits…
Write down too, your honour, that he struck me twice in the teeth and in the chest.
— When your place was searched, they found one more nut…
Whereabouts did you unscrew that one, and when?
— Would that be the nut that was lying under the little red trunk?
— I don't know where it was lying at your place, only that it was found.
When did you unscrew it?
— I never unscrewed that one; Ignashka gave it me, the son of Semyon the one-eyed.
That's the one under the trunk I'm speaking of; but the one out in the yard, in the sledge, that one Mitrofan and I unscrewed together.
— Which Mitrofan?
— Mitrofan Petrov…
Surely you've heard of him?
He makes seine nets hereabouts and sells them to the gentry.
He needs a great many of these very nuts.
Reckon ten or so of them for every net…
— Listen to me… Article 1081 of the Code of Punishments states that for any damage to a railway inflicted with intent, when such damage may expose to danger the traffic proceeding along the said railway, and the guilty party knew that the consequence thereof must be a disaster… do you follow? knew!
And you could not but have known what this unscrewing leads to… he is sentenced to exile at hard labour.
— Of course, you know better…
We are ignorant folk… what should we understand?
— You understand everything perfectly well!
You're lying, you're putting it on!
— Why should I lie?
Ask in the village, if you don't believe me…
Without a sinker there's nothing to be caught but bleak, and what could be poorer than a gudgeon — yet even he won't come to you without a sinker.
— You'd better tell me about the asp next!
— the examining magistrate smiles.
— The asp isn't found in our parts…
We let the line out without a sinker, along the top of the water, with a butterfly for bait; the chub takes it, and even that but rarely.
— Well, hold your tongue…
A silence falls.
Denis shifts from one foot to the other, stares at the table with its green baize and blinks hard, as though what stood before him were not baize but the sun.
The examining magistrate writes rapidly.
— Am I to be going?
— asks Denis after a certain silence.
— No.
I must take you into custody and send you to prison.
Denis stops blinking and, raising his thick eyebrows, looks questioningly at the official.
— How do you mean, to prison?
Your honour!
I've no time for that, I must get to the fair; I'm to collect three roubles from Yegor for the lard…
— Be quiet, don't interrupt.
— To prison…
If there were something to go for, I'd go, but like this… out of a clear sky…
За что?
What for?
I've not stolen, seemingly, nor have I been fighting…
And if it's the arrears you have your doubts about, your honour, then don't believe the village elder…
You ask the gentleman, the permanent member of the board…
There's no cross on him, on that elder…
— Silence!
— I am silent as it is…
— mutters Denis.
— But that the elder lied about the accounts, that I'll swear to on oath…
There are three of us brothers: Kuzma Grigoryev, that is, then Yegor Grigoryev, and myself, Denis Grigoryev…
— You are hindering me…
Hey, Semyon!
— shouts the examining magistrate.
— Take him away!
— There are three of us brothers, — mutters Denis, as two burly soldiers take hold of him and lead him out of the chamber.
— A brother is not answerable for a brother…
Kuzma doesn't pay, and you, Denis, must answer for it…
Judges!
The late master, the general, is dead, the kingdom of heaven be his, or he'd have shown you something, you judges…
One must judge with understanding, not just anyhow…
Flog a man, if you must, but let it be for cause, in good conscience…
Where to go next
The other thirteen books are graded by level, and the numbers on how much Russian you need are measured on these very texts. If «Злоумышленник» was comfortable, the reading order says what to take next.
